TSUNAMI : NATURAL DISASTER / REMINDER FROM GOD

December 2006, everyone in the world should remember this date. A huge wave (Tsunami) came from Indian Ocean and hit a small city, Banda Aceh. Approximately, 230000 people were killed in Acheh and about 500000 were left homeless. It was a sadness day in the world.

It's occured when an off-shore earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Ritcher scale struck the seabed between the Island of Simeulue in Acheh and Nias in North Sumatera. In general, the Tsunami that hit Banda Aceh has produced nearly 10,000 times more energy than a bomb that was dropped down Hiroshima.

The Tsunami also struck the country which is located in the coastline..

1. Malaysia
2. Thailand
3. Sri Lanka
4. India
5. Bangladesh
6. Somalia

In General, How Tsunami Occurred???

According to Scientist (Geologist) Tsunami can be generated in certain way:

1. Earthquake that occurring in the ocean floor
2. Volcanic action such as, landslide and eruption
3. When a meteorite landing in the ocean

The Tsunami that occurred in December 2004 is caused by the slipping of a large portion between the Burma Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate. The slipping between these two plates has generated a huge earthquake deep into the ocean. This earthquake has released a lot of energy that form a Tsunami.

We are lucky to live in Malaysia. We know that certain country especially our country Malaysia is located outside of the active earthquake territory. That’s why, many of our people seems doesn’t care about Tsunami and Earthquake. As far as i concern there is no safety device or alarm that can remind us if earthquake or even a small earthquake occurred. From my observation we only use media as a messenger. We have to aware that, this is an unpredictable disaster and we can't predict when it would be happened again.

Different Point of View

In different point of view...Do you agree if this disaster is just one of the reminder from God for all of us??? If we look at the situation and our community today, you will know what exactly i mean. We are now facing the truth that we are far from being a good Muslim. I'm not accusing our people, but what i want to do, is just to express my concern on the things that happened in our world today.

Is it the world is nearly end??? Only God Knows.

Here i want to share about several information from Al-Quran which is might be related to our situation now.

(QS. Al-Isra' : 16-17).

This sentence show that, how Allah has warned and remind us.. So..please think it again..

Do you know the tsunami that caused devastation around the India Ocean on December 26, 2004 continued to travel around the world. Although greatly reduced in size, the tsunami was recorded on tide gauges at Atlantic City on the East coast of the Unites States 32 hours after the earthquake that set it off. At that point it was only about 23 centimeters (9 inches) high. This would not have been noticeable to anyone on the beach since the normal wave motion is of significantly greater magnitude. Twenty-four minutes after reaching Atlantic City the tsunami went ashore at Port Canaveral about 1600 kilometers (1000 miles) to the south. At this point the wave was 34 cm (13.4 inches) high. Finally, the tsunami was last detected in the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans 36 hours after the earthquake that started it all in the Indian Ocean near Sumatra.

Love Our Planet..

Can u imagine.. in the nearer future what would happen to our planet??? Have u ever think about it, have u ever concern about it.. That is the question that always play in my mind..

I have read many articles especially about our environment, how it being exploited by unresponsibility people who never think about the bad causes that could happen in the future. Did you ever notice about the Chernobyl Disaster in Ukraine, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Climate change rapidly in all over the world due to our own mistake.. Some people just said, "mmm that's nothing to worry about it".. They just think about money, money and money..

The usage of fossil fuel is one of the main contributor for the increasing our earth tempreture. More carbon dioxide is now in the atmosphere than has been in the past 650,000 years. This carbon stays in the atmosphere, acts like a warm blanket, and holds in the heat.. "GLOBAL WARMING"

In the past the Earth's climate has changed as a result of natural causes in our atmosphere. The changes we are witnessing and those that are predicted are largely due to human behaviour: we are burning fossil fuels, and heating up the planet at the same time. We blow exponential amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere every year – 29 billion tonnes of it (2004) and rising – and this warms the globe.

The nation like U.S, which is considered as addicted to gasoline-thirsty is seems doesn't want to compromise about what happen at this moment. The United States, with only four percent of the world’s population, is responsible for 22% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Here i will show you some of the Early Warning Sign and the Consequences of Global Warming

1. Heat waves and periods of unsuallly warm weather
2. Ocean warming, see level rise and coastal flooding. (Super powerful hurricanes, fueled by

warmer ocean temperatures are the “smoking gun” of global warming)
3. Glaciers melting (The massive ice sheets in the Arctic are melting at alarming rates. This is

causing the oceans to rise)
4. Arctic and Antarctic warming

5. Spreading disease (As temperatures rise, disease-carrying mosquitoes and rodents spread,

infecting people in their wake)
6. Earlier spring arrival
7. Plant and animal range shifts and population changes
8. Coral reef bleaching
9. Downpours, heavy snowfalls, and flooding
10. Droughts and fires

This is just a warning sign and we might be knew what would happen to our planet in the future if these things continuosly occured.

We go further to look at what actually happen in Antartica. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Antarctic-Ice-Shelf-Collapses-Due-to-Global-Warming-5879.shtml

The world organization such as IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is currently working hard to summarize the best available way to stop climate change. WWF is intend to work with people, professional, business and government to find possible solution to reduce CO2 emmisions and help slowing the global warming.

Climate change, has changed our life...

Do you want to end our world like this...
Please...Think it again...

Micropaleontology....

What is micropaleontology? Perhaps, not so much people really know or understand about this term. How about people who has geology background? They might know this word.

As far as I concern, in Malaysia there are only two universities (UM n UKM) have conduct this course to their geology’s student, but unfortunately only for those who been chosen to Petroleum Geology Programmed. Lack of exposure of this course makes it unpopular among the student and the people around as well. Many people didn’t know what is the important of micropaleontology, but this thing, not happen in Oil and Gas Industries especially someone who involved in oil and gas exploration.

I will give a brief explanation about what is micropaleontology and how it been widely used in petroleum exploration.

Micropaleontology is a branch of geology which studies microfossil. Microfossils are fossils, generally not larger than four millimeters and only can be studied by using microscope. Every one must be familiar with the large fossil such as dinosaur, but here, we talk about very small fossil. Here are the several organisms that, when it preserved, it will be considered as microfossils.

Pollen and Spore (derived from Plant) – derived from continental environment
Foraminifera (Protist) – Sea to deep sea environment

Actually these organisms existed on the earth since million2 years ago. In oil and gas exploration, this kind of fossils is strongly used for dating the age of the rock formations that generate the petroleum and used to interpret the environment where the rock been deposited. From these fossils, we also can predict whether the rock formation is mature enough to generate petroleum and gas. In Malaysia, the age of the basin (the place where petroleum can be explored) is approximately 20-30 million year’s old.

This is just a brief explanation,

I Dont Know...

Hello to everyone..

Actually, I have no idea what I want to write at this moment. Honestly, I have no experience in blog writing. But my prime goal is want to share vital information and my past experience to all of the readers especially in geology.

Since one year I’ve been working as a geologist and environmentalist, I’ve gained a little experience especially in oil and gas industry. Despite being a geologist, I also want to express my concern about what happen to our poor world today.
